2016 opens up new opportunities for enterprises seeking to obtain EU grants for projects that would contribute to the development of their business. Aid will be distributed at national as well as regional level, especially to projects involving:

  • research and development;
  • purchases of tangible and intangible assets;
  • investments in renewable energy sources.

Aid for R&D work at national level is distributed through Operational Programme Smart Growth (OP SG). The call for proposals to sub-measure 1.1.2 OP SG "R&D on pilot/demonstration installations" is now open until the end of February 2016. The aid is available for projects which involve development efforts on product and process innovation. You can also apply for a grant for R&D under sub-measure 1.1.1 OP SG "Industrial research and development work in enterprises". Additionally, private entities may seek aid for R&D activities under regional operational programmes, but that aid is earmarked mainly for SMEs. Large enterprises may obtain grants under those programmes for projects implemented in collaboration with SMEs, non-governmental organisations or research institutions. Calls for proposals of such projects will be held in the first half of 2016 under, for instance, measure 1.2 "Research and development in enterprises" ROP for Mazowieckie Province (innovation vouchers for SMEs), sub-measure I.2.2 "R&D projects in enterprises" ROP for Łódzkie Province, sub-measure 1.2.1 "Supporting research and development processes" ROP for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, measure 1.1 "Research and development projects in enterprises" ROP for Zachodniopomorskie Province, or sub-measure 1.1.1 "Expansion through innovation – grant support" ROP for Pomorskie Province.

Investment aid to increase innovativeness and competitiveness of enterprises through investments in tangible assets and intangible assets will be available at national and regional level to SMEs only. Generally speaking, grants for purchases of tangible assets will be available on condition that a project involves implementation of (own or purchased) R&D results with the aim of marketing new or significantly improved products or services. Within the framework of OP SG, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises may receive grants for such projects in the first half of 2016 under sub-measure 3.2.1 "Research to market" and sub-measure 3.2.2 "Loan for technological innovations". At super-regional level you can apply for a grant under Operational Programme Eastern Poland (OP EP) which covers five provinces: Lubelskie, Podlaskie, Podkarpackie, Świętokrzyskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie. Sub-measure 1.3.1 "SMEs implement innovations" offers aid to businesses which participate in co-operation projects that lead to the development of innovative products through implementation of (own or purchased) R&D results. The next call for proposals under this measure is planned in the middle of 2016. At regional level, investment projects will be eligible for aid under e.g. sub-measure II.3.1 "Innovations in SMEs" ROP for Łódzkie Province (call for proposals will last from 22/02 to 03/03/2016), sub-measure 2.2.1 "Profiled projects – grant support" ROP for Pomorskie Province (call for proposals planned from 01/02 to 15/03/2016), measure 1.5 "Enterprise projects supporting development of regional and smart specialisations" ROP for Zachodniopomorskie Province (call for proposals from 18/01 to 18/03/2016), measure 1.4 "Supporting SMEs" ROP for Podkarpackie Province (call for proposals from 19/01 to 31/03/2016).

As regards RES (renewable energy sources), large enterprises will be able to apply for grants mainly within the framework of national Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment (OP IE) under measure 1.2 "Promotion of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources in enterprises". Aid will be available for projects such as upgrade of production lines to improve their energy efficiency, comprehensive energy upgrade of buildings in enterprises, applying energy efficient technologies, upgrade of local sources of heat (including replacement with RES systems), use of energy recovery technologies including waste heat energy systems in enterprises. The next call for proposals under this measure is planned in the second quarter of 2016. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises will be entitled to apply for grants for RES projects within the framework of regional operational programmes. First calls for proposals in this area are planned yet in the first quarter of 2016.
