RÖDL Energy Prophet

Investors in battery energy storage systems (BESS) need clear, early insight into economic viability. Negative electricity prices, widening price spreads, and curtailment of renewable energy (RE) plants turn operational flexibility into a decisive competitive advantage. The RÖDL Energy Prophet simulates revenue streams from electricity trading and feed‑in shifting. It evaluates storage configurations using historical market data and price forecasts, and it supports analysis of both stand‑alone and co‑location projects.

What is the RÖDL Energy Prophet?

The RÖDL Energy Prophet is an algorithm-based analysis tool for the quantitative evaluation and optimization of revenue potential of BESS projects – both stand-alone and in co-location with RE plants.

The tool simulates revenue from electricity trading and feed‑in shifting and evaluates storage configurations using historical market data and price forecasts. This delivers investment‑grade insights that help you set project strategy before committing capital.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Arbitrage Analysis: Revenue forecasts from day-ahead and intraday arbitrage for stand-alone BESS.
  • Co-Location Evaluation: Revenue forecasts for combined projects of RE plants and BESS, including feed-in shifting and curtailment reduction.
  • Scenario Modeling: Calculation of different storage configurations and operating strategies for well-founded comparisons.
  • Backtesting: Validation of forecasts against real historical market data.
  • International market coverage: Tailored analysis for the major European electricity markets and their specific conditions.
  • Decision-Ready Results: Directly usable as a basis for economic and investment analyses.

Systematic analysis of revenue potential

Module 1: Arbitrage Module for Stand-Alone BESS

An algorithm-based module that quantifies revenue from electricity price arbitrage trading of stand-alone BESS.

Scope of Services:

  • Revenue forecasts from day-ahead and intraday trading
  • Optimization algorithm for market price-driven charging and discharging
  • Simulation based on real market and price data
  • Forecasting and backtesting functionality
  • Scenarios for different BESS configurations and strategies
  • Basis for further economic, IRR, and sensitivity analyses

Your Added Value:

  • Assessment of market and price risk exposure
  • Evaluation of alternative marketing strategies (Day-Ahead-Only, Intraday-Only, Mixed)
  • Transparent, traceable and data-driven scenario simulations

Module 2: Co-Location RE Plant & BESS (“Green Power Storage”)

An algorithm-based module for revenue optimization and evaluation of co-location projects combining RE plants and BESS (“Green Power Storage”).

Scope of Services:

  • Revenue forecasting from combined electricity marketing of RE plants and BESS
  • Price-driven feed-in shifting for
    • Increasing profile value
    • Boosting market revenues
    • Reducing curtailment losses
  • Analysis of electricity volumes at negative, zero, and positive spot market prices
  • Evaluation of different direct marketer fees
  • Mapping of
    • EEG-subsidized and unsubsidized plants
    • Greenfield and brownfield projects
    • Various market strategies
    • Forecasting and backtesting for strategy validation

Your Added Value:

  • Quantification of additional revenue through BESS integration
  • Decision support for co-location design and BESS size
  • Transparent presentation of the impact of direct marketer costs

How the Co-Location Module Connects RE Plants and BESS

Day-ahead and intraday prices, along with the RE generation profile and current market data, are fed into the optimization engine. It calculates when the RE plant should feed in, charge the BESS, or discharge it, thereby maximizing revenue from the combined operation of the RE plant and battery storage. The RÖDL Energy Prophet captures this process in full transparency and provides a clear view of the revenue potential of your co-location project.

How BESS Operates in the Market

Example PV: The BESS charges when electricity is cheap and feeds in when prices rise. This simple principle of electricity price arbitrage unfolds its economic value throughout the day: At noon, when a lot of PV electricity is generated, prices are low. The BESS is charged to shift the PV generation to time windows with higher prices. Therefore, feeding in during hours with negative electricity prices or curtailment of the plant can be avoided. The same applies at night when prices are low due to low demand. In the morning and evening, when demand is high, no RE generation prevails, and prices are correspondingly high, the BESS feeds the temporarily stored PV electricity into the grid. The RÖDL Energy Prophet simulates exactly this behavior, based on real market data and for various BESS configurations.

Module 3: Commercial & Industrial BESS (in planning)

Integration of individual consumer load profiles of companies and a useful combination with BESS.

  • Revenue forecasting of self-consumption optimization of RE plants
  • Peak shaving and reduction of grid fees
  • Prospectively combinable with arbitrage strategies
  • Launch expected Q3 2026
