Tariffs and relief measures

The United States of America implemented general tariffs on imported Thai goods at a rate of 19 % as of 7 August 2025. Including other existing tariffs, the overall burden is significant. For example, exports of automobiles and automotive parts are subject to 25 % tariffs. Electronics and agricultural products exported to the US are subject to 36 % tariffs.

Originally, the US administration planned to impose a rate of 36 % but reduced to the imposed 19 % after Thailand made concessions in trade negotiations, specifically a reduction on import tariffs for goods from the US to Thailand, and a commitment to purchase certain goods from the US, including liquified natural gas and aircrafts.

Additionally, some US digital digital service providers in Thailand shall be exempt from Thailand´s digital services tax. Furthermore, Thailand and the USA agreed on a reduction of the existing trade surplus over the next 5 years.

To mitigate the impact of tariffs in Thailand, the government is investigating various relief measures for companies affected by the tariffs, including:
  • Special credit facilities;
  • Expansion and improvement of investment incentives offered by the Thai Board of Investment;
  • Economic stimulus measures,
  • The government is further investigating options to grant Corporate Income Tax reductions and tax credits to affected companies in Thailand. However, nothing final has been announced to date.

The impact of the tariffs remains to be seen. Given that the US has imposed tariffs on all of Thailand´s regional competitors (Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines), the overall competitive balance among these countries remains levelled. However, experts have expressed particular concern for Thailand´s automotive industry and are urging it to rely less on US buyers in the future.
