On 23 December 2019, the Rödl Employee Fund for Children’s Aid sponsored a Christmas party for about 70 children from a small community in the suburbs of Cape Town.

The community consists of 36 houses and belongs to the poorer population of South Africa. Many of the children suffer child neglect from their families, are exposed to violence and drugs from an early age and do not attend school regularly. The Christmas party was organised for the second time and was a tremendous success. The Rödl Employee Fund for Children’s Aid provided food, drinks and sweets for the children, which were received by all attendees with great joy. We could feel the joy among the children that morning.

In addition, at the beginning of 2020, at the start of the new school year in South Africa, the Rödl Employee Fund for Children’s Aid donated school supplies for 68 pupils, mainly foster children. The sad reality in South Africa is that many children do not have any school supplies and they are too ashamed to go to school. We could see the effect of the donation of the new school supplies for ourselves: the social worker who works with the children in the community expected that 10 children would be picked up by the school bus on the first day of school. But it turned out that it was 28 (!!) children, who proudly brought their new school supplies. Further supplies were donated to the pupils of a small privately run special school that looks after autistic children in particular. In South Africa, there are very few state special schools and private schools are generally very expensive. This school is mainly attended by foster children and children from poor families, as the school fees are relatively low. We were warmly welcomed by the school headmaster and pupils and the joy at the new school supplies was great. Further supplies will be donated to foster children of two state schools in Cape Town’s disadvantaged areas.
