One of the decisive factors behind Malaysia's economic growth is the abundance of natural resources such as tin, rubber, palm oil, and petroleum. In recent years, Malaysia has successfully transformed its economy, shifting from an agriculture and commodity-based economy to one driven by manufacturing and services sectors. The Malaysian Government has set strategic long-term goals to further transform the economy to be more digital and sustainable. Through initiatives like the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, the Twelfth Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Masterplan 2030 or the National Energy Transition Roadmap, the government aims to accelerate digitalisation, promote sustainable development, and ensure social inclusivity. Malaysia aims to become a leading semiconductor hub by attracting significant investments, developing local talent, building advanced infrastructure, and positioning itself as a neutral production location amid global tensions. The country plans to expand its market presence beyond testing and packaging into high-tech design and manufacturing.

Malaysia's international trade benefits in particular from the Strait of Malacca, one of the most important sea routes in the world. It runs between the Indonesian island of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. With its numerous airports, seaports, and a well-developed rail network, Malaysia offers sound infrastructure. Especially the economic zones such as the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in the vicinity of Penang, the Port Klang Free Zone near Kuala Lumpur, and the Iskandar Development Region neighbouring Singapore offer additional incentives and an excellent investment environment for foreign investors. The new Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone is a milestone which aims to enhance cross-border connectivity, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and strengthen the business ecosystem in the region.
