Rödl Employee Fund for Children's Aid: Reading Worlds in Cologne - Reading Sponsorships for Children

Through another local commitment, the Rödl Employee Fund for Children's Aid supports two daycare centers in Cologne-Neubrück and Cologne-Ehrenfeld with the "Reading Worlds" project of the Cologne Volunteer Agency.

Reading sponsorships in two Cologne daycare centers

With "LeseWelten" (Reading Worlds), the Cologne Volunteer Agency introduces children in Cologne daycare centers to reading in regular reading sessions. In this way, even those children who have little contact with children's literature in their private lives are given access to reading and the beginnings of an enthusiasm for language.

Reading aloud sessions with Cologne volunteers awaken enthusiasm for reading

Volunteers arranged by the organization read aloud from children's books purchased with project funds on at least a monthly basis in cooperating daycare centers in Cologne. As in all areas of daily life, the pandemic initially shifted face-to-face events to the digital realm and they now take place in hybrid form – either via video transmission or in the daycare centers themselves, depending on the circumstances. Local companies can take on "project sponsorships" in order to finance the complete package for individual daycare centers, from literature procurement to overhead costs.

Local help through personal contact

Through personal contact with Simone Krost, the person responsible for the project on the part of the Cologne Volunteer Agency, I became aware of the possibility of a reading sponsorship for companies. In an uncomplicated coordination with the Rödl Employee Foundation for Children's Aid, a support possibility for this local project, which is very close to the purpose of the Children's Fund, was quickly found. In May 2021, I had already privately collected donations for the project as part of the organization's annual reading run – now the two reading aloud sponsorships by the Rödl Employee Foundation for Children's Aid were added.

Despite Corona: Reading aloud in presence and digitally

Despite the restrictions imposed by Corona, interest in additional support and varied learning experiences in Cologne's daycare centers remains unbroken. With the "Jecke Pänz" daycare center in Neubrück and the "Grüner Weg" daycare center in Ehrenfeld, we found two facilities that the foundation supports with reading aloud sponsorships totaling 1,600 Euros. From the donation sum, new reading material could be purchased and the administrative costs covered.
