Campinas is the second biggest municipality in the state of São Paulo and the fourteenth most populous city in Brazil. With a population of more than three million, it forms the tenth largest metropolitan area in Brazil and, together with Greater São Paulo, accounts for approximately twenty-five million inhabitants or 62 per cent of the total population of the state.

Industry and commerce are the main sources of income in Campinas. As the capital of the Brazilian Silicon Valley, it is responsible for approximately 15 per cent of all national technology production and is the country’s third biggest research and development centre. The greater Campinas region is home to more than 10,000 companies, many of which count among the leading in Brazil, and also the third largest concentration of German companies in the country.

The cultivation of coffee also played a chief role in the development of Campinas, with the city assuming the role of a regional coffee-growing hub during the establishment of the German community in the district of Freiburg. Rich in culture and history, Campinas boasts numerous tourist attractions, museums, theatres and parks.
